Our Stay at Las Cruces KOA Journey: A Hidden Gem in the Southwest

When we decided to stop at the Las Cruces KOA Journey during our latest RV adventure, I’ll admit I didn’t have high expectations. I pictured a simple spot out in the middle of nowhere, with limited access to stores or activities.

Well, let me tell you, I couldn’t have been more wrong. This charming KOA not only exceeded my expectations but also turned out to be one of the most delightful RV stops we’ve experienced.

Here’s everything you need to know about this fantastic RV park and why Las Cruces, New Mexico, is worth a visit on your next Midwest excursion.

Las Cruces KOA Journey might be a smaller park, but it is brimming with charm and character. Nestled on the outskirts of town, this KOA offers breathtaking views of the Organ Mountains and the Mesilla Valley.

Pulling into the park, we were immediately struck by how well-maintained the property was. Everything was tidy, organized, and inviting.

We visited in December, and the holiday decorations at the entrance set the tone for a warm and festive stay. The front office and surrounding areas were beautifully adorned with lights and ornaments, easily rivaling some of the best holiday displays we’ve seen at RV parks.

It’s clear that the owner takes great pride in maintaining the property and making guests feel welcome.

One of the first things we look for in an RV park is the amenities, and Las Cruces KOA Journey did not disappoint. Whether you’re stopping for a night or planning a longer stay, the park has everything you need to feel right at home. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Full Hookups with 50 Max Amps and 85’ Max Length sites, perfect for larger rigs.
  • Wi-Fi to keep you connected.
  • KampK9® Dog Park and a “Wash Your Paws” dog wash with a dryer—our furry companion was thrilled!
  • Laundry Facilities that are open 24 hours.
  • A Community Fire Pit with seating, where we enjoyed stargazing and chatting with fellow RVers.
  • Basketball Court, Cornhole, Tetherball, and Patio Swings for family-friendly fun.
  • Seasonal Swimming Pool (open from May 15 to September 30).
  • Cabins equipped with refrigerators and microwaves, ideal for family or friends who might want to join you without bringing an RV.

They even provide sleds for visiting nearby White Sands National Park, which we found to be a thoughtful touch.

We spent an afternoon wandering through the local shops and galleries, sampling authentic Mexican cuisine, and learning about the area’s rich history. Don’t miss the Basilica of San Albino, a stunning church that dates back to the 1800s.

White Sands National Park

  • One of the highlights of our trip was visiting White Sands National Park, about an hour’s drive from the KOA. This natural wonder features miles of glistening white gypsum dunes. Whether you’re hiking, sledding (using the KOA’s sleds), or simply soaking in the surreal beauty, it’s an experience you’ll never forget.

  • For outdoor enthusiasts, the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument is a must. The rugged mountains offer hiking trails with panoramic views and opportunities to spot wildlife. It’s a great spot for photography or simply enjoying the serenity of the desert landscape.
