As full-time RVers, finding a place that feels like a temporary home is always a highlight of our travels.
Our recent stay at the San Antonio / Alamo KOA Holiday RV Resort during December was exactly that—a wonderful oasis amidst the bustle of a city rich in history and culture.
Whether you’re passing through or planning an extended stay, this KOA has much to offer, and we’re excited to share our experience.
Table of Contents
1. First Impressions: From Industrial to Inviting

Getting to the KOA was an interesting experience. The neighborhood leading to the resort is quite industrial and might feel a little sketchy at first glance.
However, as soon as you enter the gated property, you’re met with a sense of tranquility that KOA locations are known for. It’s like stepping into a self-contained village, complete with all the amenities you need to relax and enjoy your stay.
2. RV Spots and Amenities

We booked a pull-through spot, which was a breeze to get into. All the spots are gravel, but they’re level and spacious enough for even the biggest rigs.
The resort offers full hookups with 50 Max Amp service and 90’ maximum length spots, accommodating a wide range of RV sizes and setups.
The amenities here are extensive. From Wi-Fi to KampK9® for your furry travel companions, this KOA has it all:
- Pool: Open year-round (though not heated, so it wasn’t usable during our December visit).
- Snack Bar: Perfect for a convenient breakfast or quick bite.
- Fishing Pond: Great for a relaxing afternoon.
- Bike Rentals: Explore the 8-mile bicycle trail right from the property.
- Planned Activities: Adding a touch of fun and community to your stay.
- Public Transportation Access: ($) Convenient for exploring the city without driving your rig.

Other amenities include propane refills, firewood, laundry facilities, deluxe cabins, and a pet playground. Whether you’re here to relax, work remotely, or explore, the KOA has thought of everything.
3. Exploring San Antonio: Must-Do Activities

The resort’s central location makes it an excellent base for exploring San Antonio. Everything we wanted to do was within a 20-minute Uber ride, making it incredibly convenient.
The Alamo
- No trip to San Antonio is complete without visiting The Alamo. This iconic historic site transports you back to the days of Texas independence. It’s a powerful experience and a must-see for history buffs.
The Historic Pearl
- For foodies and shopaholics, the Historic Pearl is a gem. We loved the good eats, unique shops, and vibrant atmosphere. It’s a great spot to spend an afternoon soaking up local flavors and culture.
The Shops at Rivercenter
- Shopping enthusiasts will enjoy The Shops at Rivercenter. This indoor mall offers a variety of stores and dining options, perfect for some retail therapy.
Evening Riverboat Ride
- This was a highlight of our trip. The boat ride along the San Antonio River was magical, especially with the Christmas lights illuminating the way. One unique aspect was going through a lock that raised us up 15 feet—an engineering marvel and a very cool experience for all ages.
The Tobin Center and Majestic Theatre
- For entertainment lovers, these venues are top-notch. Catch a live performance or concert at these historic theaters for a memorable night out in San Antonio.
4. Other Nearby Attractions
If you have extra time, consider these additional activities:

- San Antonio Zoo: A family-friendly destination with a wide variety of animals and exhibits.
- Natural Bridge Caverns: Explore the stunning underground formations just a short drive from the city.
- Market Square: Immerse yourself in local culture at this bustling marketplace filled with Mexican goods, food, and music.
- Tower of the Americas: Enjoy breathtaking views of the city from this iconic observation tower.
- Six Flags Fiesta Texas: Perfect for thrill-seekers and families looking for a fun day out.
5. Dining Recommendations

San Antonio is a foodie’s paradise. In addition to the Historic Pearl, we recommend:
- Mi Tierra Café y Panadería: A festive Mexican restaurant known for its vibrant atmosphere and delicious dishes.
- The Guenther House: Enjoy breakfast or brunch in a charming historic setting.
- La Panadería: A bakery and café offering artisan breads and mouthwatering pastries.
