It is 4:30 in the morning. The Las Vegas Strip is still blazing behind you as a taxi drops you at 4390 Polaris Avenue, about five minutes from the hotels. One of the best ways to see Las Vegas is from a hot air balloon ride.

A crew is already there, laying out equipment in the dark. Within an hour, you are standing in the open Mojave Desert watching a balloon of up to 330,000 cubic feet filled with hot air as the horizon begins to shift from black to deep violet.

The burner fires with a low roar. The envelope lifts. And then, without any sensation of jumping or dropping, the ground simply moves away beneath you.

That is the thing nobody tells you about hot air balloon flights before you go: there is no moment of takeoff. The ascent is so slow and so smooth that passengers who arrived expecting to be terrified frequently describe feeling nothing except quiet.

Vegas Balloon Rides specifically notes that even guests with a fear of heights regularly complete the flight comfortably. The balloon travels with the wind, not against it, which means no turbulence, no engine vibration, and no sensation of speed.

You are not flying through the air. You are moving with it, at an average of about 5 mph, covering roughly 5 miles across one of the most dramatically open landscapes in the American Southwest.

Vegas Balloon Rides, rated the number one balloon operator in Las Vegas, puts passengers above the Mojave Desert approximately one hour west of the Strip.

Once airborne, the views extend to Death Valley, the Spring Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada. These are not backgrounds visible from any hotel rooftop or observation deck in the city.

The Mojave at sunrise from inside a balloon gondola is a genuinely different landscape from what Las Vegas presents from ground level, and it shifts completely depending on which morning you fly.

The People Flying You

Hot Air Balloon Ride Pilots

The pilots at Vegas Balloon Rides are not weekend enthusiasts. Every pilot holds an FAA-certified Commercial balloon pilot license, the same certification structure as fixed-wing airplane pilots, requiring ground school, written exams, and flight tests before any passengers board.

Lead pilot Jean-François, known as Jeff, was born into a family of balloonists in France and took his first flight at age three. He was part of the 2008 Hot Air Balloon World Champion team.

Team before spending years flying above the Alps, the African Savanna, and European forests. He settled in the Mojave Desert and has been the lead pilot at Vegas Balloon Rides since 2019.

Chief pilot Casey learned to fly from his father in Indiana, became chief pilot at Vegas Balloon Rides in 2015, and built a reputation that earned him a posting flying above the savanna in Kenya, where he went on to become one of Africa’s most experienced balloon pilots.

The Mojave Desert works in their favor operationally. Its wide-open terrain provides unlimited landing options, and its climate creates consistently favorable ballooning conditions.

Every flight operates under strict weather thresholds: winds must be under 10 knots (approximately 11.5 mph), no rain, no approaching storms within 100 miles, visibility of at least 3 miles, and weather ceilings of at least 3,000 feet.

Vegas Balloon Rides employs trained weather specialists who analyze conditions daily before any flight is cleared to depart. The company is fully insured through an American-owned, A+ rated insurance company.

Choosing Your Flight

Vegas Balloon Rides offers four flight formats.

The Signature Champagne Sunrise Flight at $359 per person is the flagship experience: a shared sunrise balloon ride over the Mojave Desert, with complimentary transportation from the Welcome Center to the launch area included.

After landing, every Signature Flight passenger receives a champagne toast. The balloons used for shared flights carry up to 16 passengers, plus the pilot, with partitioned gondola compartments for comfort and personal space during the flight.

For occasions that call for something exclusive, the VIP Private Sunrise Flight at $1,999 per person accommodates up to 5 passengers in a smaller balloon sized specifically for the group.

It includes limo pickup directly from your Las Vegas hotel and premium French champagne on landing. It is designed for proposals, weddings, anniversaries, and moments where sharing a basket with other guests would change the entire feel of the experience.

For larger private parties, Vegas Balloon Rides also offers a tethered balloon event format, where the balloon is secured and used as a centrepiece attraction at your venue. Sponsorship and brand placement on the balloon envelope are available for corporate campaigns.

Groups of 3 or more on the Signature Flight receive 15% off. Enter “Group” at checkout when booking online.

Gift certificates for any flight are available and can be purchased directly through the booking system, making them a strong option for anyone wanting to give the experience as a gift before the recipient chooses their date.

The Morning Timeline

Hot Air Balloon Ride Timeline

Your adventure actually begins the evening before. After 8 PM, call the flight status line at (702) 608-8382 to confirm your flight is on schedule and to hear your exact meetup time for the following morning. The team also sends an email reminder so you have the information in writing.

The meeting location is the Vegas Balloon Rides Welcome Center at 4390 Polaris Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89103, about a five-minute taxi ride from the Strip.

You meet the crew there approximately 2 hours before sunrise, then board complimentary transport to the flying area, which is roughly one hour west of the city. This complimentary transport from the meeting location to the launch site is included in the Signature Flight price.

Once at the launch site, the crew inflates the balloon and conducts all pre-flight checks. Passengers board the gondola basket, which features partitioned compartments for comfort and safety.

The larger balloons carry up to 16 passengers, plus the pilot. The burner fires, and the ascent begins. You stay airborne for at least 45 minutes, sometimes longer, depending on wind and conditions.

Cell service inside the balloon is strong throughout the flight, and photography with phones and cameras is fully encouraged. The official hashtag is #vegasballoonrides. After landing, the champagne comes out.

The full adventure, from meetup to return, runs approximately 6 hours.

Before You Book: What to Know

Hot Air Balloon Ride Requirements

The physical requirements for this flight are straightforward but firm. Every passenger must be able to climb in and out of the gondola basket independently, stand for the entire flight without assistance, and walk out of a field after landing if the terrain requires it. The minimum passenger age is 6.

Anyone aged 6 to 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The maximum weight per passenger is 280 lbs, and passengers may be weighed at check-in for accuracy.

Expectant mothers are not permitted to fly. Passengers with back, neck, knee, hip, joint, or bone conditions in the past two years, those with osteoporosis or brittle bone issues, anyone with recent surgery or broken bones, and anyone requiring a cane, walker, wheelchair, or scooter are also not permitted for the safety of the entire group.

All passengers must be able to hear and follow the pilot’s instructions, or have someone in their party who can communicate those instructions to them.

For what to wear: dress in casual layers because the flying location runs approximately ten degrees cooler than Las Vegas city temperatures.

Closed-toe shoes, either boots or sneakers, are required. Sandals and heels are not permitted. Long pants protect against desert brush during landing and setup. Bring sunscreen and a small snack for the full 6-hour adventure. Water is provided throughout by the crew.

If a flight is canceled due to weather, vouchers purchased directly from Vegas Balloon Rides never expire and can be rescheduled at no charge.

Vouchers are fully refundable or transferable within one year from purchase, provided no flight has been taken, or the first scheduled flight is canceled at least 48 hours in advance.

Vegas Balloon Rides is open every day from 10 AM to 6 PM at (702) 553-3039 or info@vegasballoonrides.com.
